The four IPC levels explained
Inadequate, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced are the four published bands, each with a WHO description of what that level of implementation looks like.
- Inadequate (0 to 200): IPC core component implementation is deficient. Significant improvement is required.
- Basic (201 to 400): Some aspects of the core components are in place, but not sufficiently implemented. Further improvement is required.
- Intermediate (401 to 600): Most aspects are appropriately implemented. The facility should continue to improve the scope and quality of implementation and develop long-term plans to sustain and promote the existing programme.
- Advanced (601 to 800): The core components are fully implemented according to the recommendations and appropriate to the needs of the facility.
A hospital beginning its first structured assessment commonly lands in Basic or Inadequate. That is the expected starting point of a measurement programme, not a failure of one.
