The eight IPC core components

Each component is assessed by its own set of indicators and scored out of 100.

• CC1: IPC programme. Whether the hospital has an IPC programme with a trained focal point, defined objectives and a dedicated budget.
• CC2: IPC guidelines. Whether evidence-based guidelines exist, are adapted locally, and staff are trained to apply them.
• CC3: IPC education and training. Whether staff receive IPC training, how often, and whether it is evaluated.
• CC4: Healthcare-associated infection surveillance. Whether HAIs are actively monitored, by whom, and whether results are used.
• CC5: Multimodal strategies. Whether IPC interventions are implemented as a combination of measures rather than a single leaflet or poster.
• CC6: Monitoring, audit and feedback. Whether IPC practice is audited against standards and the results fed back to staff.
• CC7: Workload, staffing and bed occupancy. Whether staffing levels, bed occupancy and staff-to-patient ratios support safe IPC practice.
• CC8: Built environment, materials and equipment. Whether water, sanitation, hygiene facilities, materials and equipment support IPC at the point of care.
