The WHO IPCAF-based methodology
The WHO Infection Prevention and Control Assessment Framework (IPCAF) is a self-assessment instrument. It structures an IPC programme into eight core components, asks a set of indicator questions about each, and scores each component out of 100, for a total of 800.
IPC360 implements that instrument as it is published: the same components, the same indicators, the same scoring, and the same four interpretation bands.
The four IPC levels
- 0 to 200. Inadequate: implementation is deficient and significant improvement is required.
- 201 to 400. Basic: some aspects are in place but are not sufficiently implemented.
- 401 to 600. Intermediate: most aspects are appropriately implemented.
- 601 to 800. Advanced: the core components are fully implemented and appropriate to the facility.
What this is not
IPCAF is an assessment and improvement instrument, not a certification scheme. A score in IPC360 summarises the answers an assessor entered. It does not certify, accredit or attest that a hospital is compliant with any standard, or that it is clinically safe.
Interpretation, and any accreditation decision, rest with the hospital’s IPC and quality leadership.
