What should we work on before the next assessment?
Start with the lowest-scoring components and the highest-ranked gaps, and prefer the ones where the element is absent rather than merely inconsistent.
- Open the assessment and look at the component chart. Note the two or three lowest components.
- Open the Gap register, which is already ranked by points lost and risk.
- Within those, separate the gaps where something is missing entirely from the gaps where something exists but is applied inconsistently.
- Take the inexpensive missing items first, such as a written policy, a named focal point or a training record. They move the score and are usually quickest to put right.
- Assign an owner and a target date to each, and record the evidence that will close it.
Note: IPC360 can show you where the points were lost. Which of those your hospital can realistically fix first is a judgement for your IPC committee.
